Once I Make My Move | 5" x 7" Acrylic on Denim

Inspired by a scene from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone... "Once I make my move, the queen will take me..." and true fans can quote the rest. This piece reflects the battle I face as an artist between creating and copying. On the right hand side of the piece, the chess pieces were painted to replicate the image I was pulling inspiration from, trying to copy the shadows and the highlights exactly as I saw them. On the left hand side I allowed myself the creative freedom to be inspired by my reference photo and create without feeling the need to replicate. We as artist always battle between wanting to create something new, and feeling inspired by something already created. This piece is a reflection of both.
