Carroll Crater: A Love That Transcends Time & Space

Carroll Crater: A Love That Transcends Time & Space

I was wholeheartedly unprepared to witness the most pure gesture of love that was astronaut Jeremy Hansen announcing the name of a newly formed crater on the moon after Carroll Wiseman.

Whilst on the journey to the moon, Hansen announced over the Deep Space Network to the millions of viewers watching real time that the crew of the Artemis II mission, aboard the vehicle they named "Integrity", decided to name two newly made craters. One after the vehicle in which they were traveling, "integrity" and one after Commander Reid Wiseman's late wife, Carroll.

Hansen announced “We lost a loved one, her name was Carroll, the spouse of Reid, the mother of Katey and Ellie... (The crater is) a bright spot on the moon and we would like to call it Carroll.” The four astronauts embraced in a group hug as they embarked on their courageous journey through the stars, promoting tears not only from the astronauts, but from the millions that watched.

Carroll died in May 2020 after a five-year battle with cancer, according to her obituary, published in The Virginian-Pilot. A nurse, mother, sister, and friend, Carroll will now forever be remembered through the bright spot dedicated to her.

To be loved so deeply that even when they were the furthest from Earth and anything they had ever known, the Artemis II astronauts decided to name the crater after their Commanders wife, is a love that transcends time and space.

I made this drawing dedicated to the astronauts aboard Artemis II (Christina Koch, Jeremy Hansen, Reid Wiseman, and Victor Glover), the thousands of brilliant minds that went into the mission, and to everyone who needs more love in their life.

So each night as I look up at the sky, I am reminded of the contagious love this crew embodies and it gives me hope.

I love you to Carroll and back.
